Favorite Feature Friday – 3D Viewing

August 12, 2011

It’s Favorite Feature Friday, and today we’re celebrating Bluebeam’s new 3D viewing capabilities included in all editions of Bluebeam PDF Revu 9 – Standard, CAD and eXtreme. Don’t Leah and Helen look great?!

Bluebeam's 3D models.

In Revu, once you open a PDF file with 3D content, a floating toolbar called the 3D Hover Bar will appear in the upper left-hand corner of the workspace. This toolbar lets you customize your interaction with the 3D model.

From the toolbar you can select different viewing modes such as rotate, spin, pan, zoom and camera.  You can also change perspectives, views, lighting, background colors and render modes. Cutting-edge animation features even allow you to cycle through all 3D views contained in a PDF… no glasses required.

Bluebeam Provides eXtreme Learning and Fun at VIP Rally Day Event

August 2, 2011

This past weekend Bluebeam held its first regional event – Bluebeam VIP Rally Day – for Southern California users at LA Live’s Target Terrace in downtown Los Angeles. The event, held in conjunction with the 17th Annual X Games, proved to be an action-packed day full of eXtreme learning and fun. Bluebeam’s VIP users attended sessions given by Bluebeam’s lead engineers and product experts, including “Revu: Insider Tips & Tricks”, “Bluebeam Studio: Where collaboration and control meet” and “Introducing Bluebeam Q”.

Welcome to Bluebeam VIP Rally Day!

Bluebeam Beach Day!

July 26, 2011

One of the perks of California summers is getting to spend time at the beach. And this past weekend we took advantage of just that by holding our 2nd annual Bluebeam Beach Day at Zuma Beach in Malibu, CA. The day was filled with fun, sun, food, competitive volleyball games and of course good company. 75 Bluebeamers turned out for the festivities and it proved to be yet another memorable day. We even had a Bluebeam user stop by to say “hi” after spotting our Bluebeam banner from a distance. Pretty cool!

Here are some pics from the day:

Bluebeam Software Turns Nine

July 2, 2011

Today Bluebeam Software is celebrating nine years of PDFin’ power! We were spun out of the aerospace engineering industry from Alliance Space Systems, who had developed a smart CAD to PDF plugin to quickly deliver high-quality PDFs of SolidWorks drawings to their client, NASA JPL. Nine years and a whole lot of software releases later, Bluebeam is proud to be bringing you desktop and platform solutions for digitizing workflows, share information and feedback electronically, reducing paper usage and saving time and money while you’re at it!

To celebrate, here’s a list of some of my favorite Bluebeam moments from the past nine years:

2002 – Bluebeam Comes to Market

In the summer of 2002 Bluebeam launched Pushbutton PDF, which converted AutoCAD drawings to PDF with just the push of a button. Hailed as “fax-killer” software, Pushbutton PDF set out to change the way the architecture and engineers distributed CAD files to clients and project team members.

2003 – Good times at AU

Bluebeam has always been a fun-loving company, as you can see from our debut appearance at Autodesk University 2003.

2004 – Bluebeam introduces more PDFin’ products

Bluebeam continued its push for PDF-based communication by releasing Pushbutton Plus for AutoCAD (the predecessor to Bluebeam PDF Revu CAD) and Bluebeam Lite (the predecessor to Bluebeam PDF Revu Standard).

2005 – Hello Revu!

Bluebeam moved beyond PDF creation in 2005 and released Revu for PDF markup. With this new product came a whole new world of opportunity as Bluebeam was quickly adopted by contractors, sub-contractors, estimators, specifiers consultants and others in the design and construction industry who don’t necessarily create PDFs from CAD applications, but need a powerful solution to review and comment on them.

2006 – Going Mobile

Not long after Revu launched, Bluebeam made a tablet PC compatible version of the software. The first tablet-compatible PDF solutions for the design and construction industry, Revu won the coveted TIPTA Award at the 2006 Construct Canada show for bringing its PDFin’ powers to the field.

2007 – The launch of Revu 5.5 is very popular…and maybe a little too popular

Although it appeared like a just a minor update, we knew our users would love Revu 5.5. After all, we were rolling in PDF text editing and 64-bit compatibility into Bluebeam – two features that had been highly requested in the months preceding the launch. What we didn’t anticipate, though, was that we’d have so much traffic on launch day that we’d crash our website!

2008 – Join the Bluebeam Revolution!

What better way to point all the benefits Bluebeam offers over Adobe than to start a revolution against them?! In 2008 we launched the Bluebeam Revolution campaign, encouraging users just like you to break free from the complexities and frustrations of Adobe by switching to Bluebeam.

2009 – Bluebeam Starts Going Global

In 2009 Bluebeam released its first international version – in Swedish! Today, Revu is now available in 7 languages: English, German, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian and Spanish.

2010 – It’s Collaboratin’ Time

In 2010, Bluebeam brought our PDF markup capabilities to the cloud with the launch of Bluebeam Studio. Included in Bluebeam PDF Revu, Studio is a document-based online collaboration tool that enables users to post markups to the same copy of a single PDF, either together in real time or separately on their own time. Studio debuted at AIA, and to celebrate we threw a party in our new, Mighty Bluebeam-themed booth.

2011 – Bluebeam goes eXtreme

This year we pushed PDFin’ to the limits by releasing Revu 9 with over 30 new features, including 3D PDF viewing and a slick VisualSearch tool for locating symbols on PDFs. We also debuted Revu eXtreme for PDF power users with PDF forms creation, OCR, scripting and redaction.

Favorite Feature Friday – Sheet Set Support

July 1, 2011

It’s Favorite Feature Friday! Today we’re celebrating Bluebeam’s new sheet set support when batch creating PDFs from AutoCAD, as demonstrated by my coworker Samantha’s costume:

Revu CAD 9 and Revu eXtreme 9 include several updates and enhancements to our AutoCAD plugin for batch PDF creation. Among them is the ability to import your AutoCAD sheet sets so you can batch convert all included drawing files at once. What a time saver!

Favorite Feature Friday – The Lasso Tool

June 24, 2011

It’s Friday, which means it’s time to talk about another one of our favorite Bluebeam features! Today the focus is on the Lasso Tool, as demonstrated by Amy and Sasha.

Amy and Sasha giving their best “Lasso Tool” impressions!

The real Lasso Tool, as seen at the top of the Revu interface.

The Lasso tool was originally developed for our tablet PC users. It’s a helpful, and fun, way to multi-select PDF markups. Just grab the tool with your tablet pen or mouse, and draw around all the markups you want to select.

In this example, I used the lasso tool to multi-select all the markups except for the green callout that says “Verify dimension.”

Once you close the loop, your markups will be multi-selected. From here, you can change their properties, group the markups, lock the markups, move the markups in unison – the possibilities are (almost) endless!

The lassoed markups are now multi-selected and ready to go.

Favorite Feature Friday – The Tool Chest

June 17, 2011

It’s Favorite Feature Friday, and today we have two Bluebeamers dressed up to demonstrate the wonderfulness that is the Bluebeam Tool Chest:

Brian and Chris dressed up as the Bluebeam Tool Chest!

An oldie but a goodie, the Tool Chest has been around since day 1 of Revu. You can access the Tool Chest by clicking the blue bar in the middle left of the Revu interface to open the left dock, going to View/Tabs/Tool Chest or using keyboard shortcut Alt+X.

This exclusive feature tracks all the markups you make in your session of Bluebeam and saves them in your Recent Tools (1). If you want to place that markup again, just select it and go. And if you know you’ll use that markup over and over again across sessions, just drag it up to My Tools (2). Bluebeam also provides a number additional tool sets for free, which you can download into your session of Revu either from the Tool Set section of the Start page, or from this page on our website (3). Finally, you can create your own Tool Sets (4) and share them with your friends and colleagues. To learn how, check out this video. And remember, to keep on PDFin’!

Favorite Feature Friday – Revu eXtreme

June 10, 2011

It’s Favorite Feature Friday! Today, is a special edition of this series, because we’re highlighting my coworker Cristi. He came to work dressed up as not just a feature of Revu, but an entire edition of the software – Revu eXtreme!

Cristi dressed up as a thrill-seeking sportsman to represent Revu eXtreme!

eXtreme is the latest edition of Revu, and was just released in March. In addition to all the great features of Bluebeam, extreme includes:

  • PDF Forms creation for making any PDF a fillable form
  • OCR for transforming scanned PDFs into text searchable and selectable files
  • Scripting for automating repetitive PDF markup and editing processes, such as adding a text stamp, inserting a cover page and flattening a PDF.
  • Redaction for permanently removing confidential and sensitive text and images from PDFs.

AIA Recap – Bluebeam Goes PDFin’ in the Big Easy

May 31, 2011

The 2011 American Institute of Architects National Convention and Expo (AIA) was an exciting event for us Bluebeamers. Of course, we always love getting a chance to meet with our users. But since this was the first time we had an opportunity to show Bluebeam PDF Revu 9 and eXtreme to the architectural community, AIA was an extra special event.

After 3 days of demonstrating Revu 9, the response was great! I think the favorite new features that I saw architects rave about were our new 3D PDF viewing capabilities and our VisualSearch™ tool for locating symbols on PDFs and assigning them hyperlinks and actions.

Showing off Revu 9 to a group of architects.

Revu 9 was getting media attention at AIA, too. AECBytes included Revu in their recap on technology at the show, and AECCafe.com even interviewed our Director of Worldwide Marketing about Revu 9 while we were at the show. Check out that interview here:

Watch this video interview about Revu 9 and AIA!

To top it all off, our booth won AIA’s Best in Show Award! A select, secret group of attendees judged booths for their design, sustainability and interaction with attendees and chose us as the winner – what an honor!

Accepting the Best in Show Award.

You can see more pictures of our booth on our Facebook page.

Of course, we couldn’t go to a city like New Orleans without enjoying the local flair – and at Bluebeam, that means food. The first night in, some of my coworkers enjoyed a Cajun delicacy – turtle soup.

My coworkers tell me it tasted just like chicken.

I stuck to something a little more mainstream and had King’s cake – which is quite possibly the most sugary treat I’ve ever enjoyed in my life!

Just look at those sugar crystals!

Finally, one of my coworkers had a birthday while at AIA. We helped her celebrate by checking out a jazz band at the Spotted Cat.

All in all, AIA was a great show for Bluebeam. Were you at AIA? Share your experience below. And remember, to keep on PDFin’!
