So you want to use Bluebeam on a Mac, eh?

by

UPDATE: 03.27.12

I have an update!

Today with the launch of Bluebeam Revu 10, we are also launching our first of two iPad apps. Woo hoo! Say hello to Bluebeam Vu™ for iPad. With Vu you can sync and view PDFs, organize them, and navigate to markups through the integrated Markups list. Download it in the App Store today! Oh, did we mention it’s free?

Of course, we know you need to do more than just view PDFs on the iPad, and that’s why we’re releasing Bluebeam Revu for iPad later this year. This paid app will bring some of your favorite PDF markup and editing features from your PC onto your iPad, so stay tuned!

END UPDATE

Let me guess – did you just go to Google and type in “Bluebeam for Mac” and find this post? Well, if so, hello! I hope that this blog will help you get up and running with Bluebeam on your Mac very soon.

Now for the “probably not what you’re hoping for” answer: We don’t have a Mac version of Bluebeam PDF Revu. That doesn’t mean we never will – trust me, we know you want Mac compatibility, and we want to give it to you someday.

In the mean time, we do have many Mac users who run Bluebeam on Windows all the time. You too can toggle between both operating systems using solutions such as Boot Camp (now a built in part of OS X) or Parallels.

So go ahead, test this out using Bluebeam’s 30 day trial, and feel free to leave your feedback below or send us your suggestions to suggestions@bluebeam.com. And remember to keep on PDFin’!

  1. Gordon Says:

Virtualbox (www.virtualbox.org) is an open source project (bought out by Sun, now owned by Oracle) that also provides a way to run a Windows XP/Vista/7 virtual machine on a Mac host (as well as other OSes) to run PDF Revu. Personally, I’d much prefer a native Mac version, but this does suffice for now.

  2. Chris Baumbach Says:

Official support for Parallels and Bootcamp is encouraging and welcome. I would still very much prefer a native OS X version of Revu.

  3. Alex Wardle Says:

Please let me know if you plan to introduce an OS X version of pdf Revu.
I don’t think there is any other software (Mac or PC) which has such a comprehensive pdf toolkit – measurements, customizable stamps, customizable tools, change drawing order, flattening; etc.
I’m a big fan of Bluebeam but I hate using a PC!

    • Karen from Bluebeam Says:

Hi Alex – Thanks for the feedback! It’s something we are looking into, but I don’t have any more details (dates, etc.) to share at this time.

      Take care,
      Karen (at) bluebeaminsider.com

  4. P Says:

I hope a mac / iPAD version of Bluebeam will be ready shortly, as this combination will change the way many industries operate (paperless!)

    Regards

    Paul

  5. Chris Moran Says:

Can you give us any clues as to whether there will be a version of BlueBeam for the iPad, and if so, when it might come available.

    • Jill from Bluebeam Says:

Hi Chris – It’s something we are in the process of looking into, but I don’t have any more details (dates, etc.) to share at this time.

      Take care,
      Jill (at) bluebeaminsider.com

  6. Jeff Chapin Says:

What about using Bluebeam on an IPad? Specifically for the punch portion of the toolchest?

  7. Dan Brown Says:

Any further progress on an iPad/Android/Playbook version of this software? Thanks Jill.

    • Jill from Bluebeam Says:

Hi Dan and Jeff – We do not have an iPad app…yet. We started getting a lot of requests for one this year and I can tell you that it’s in development. We’re working hard to build something more than the basic PDF support currently offered on iPads (viewing, highlighting, text boxes, etc.), so we can provide our users with an app that will really help them digitally share design and document feedback while on the go. I do not have an exact release date to share, but I’m hearing it’ll be available at some point in 2012.

      Take care,
      Jill (at) bluebeaminsider.com

  8. Matt Says:

How about supporting a Citrix deployment?

  9. Kelsey Gallagher Says:

An iPad app will be great! Thanks Jill. We’ll be looking for it.

  10. Maurice Says:

Bluebeam and Mac – please hurry up – commercially it makes sense and so many people want it but dont want the PC bit

  11. TimG Says:

Bluebeam is built on the .NET platform. Whatever they might say about wanting to port it to Mac/iOS, they’re going to be slowed by Mono being so far behind Microsoft’s implementation of the platform. Either that or they rewrite from scratch, which I think we as users should know isn’t realistic.

  12. Jason Probst Says:

An Ipad app would be awesome, even if it started simple with the ability to join studio, view plans and be able to use the punch tools

  13. Brian Says:

I use Bluebeam all of the time at work to review and edit construction drawings in a PDF format. i like the measurement and highlighter tool the best. I just got an iPad and since an iPad verson is not out yet, has anyone found a good replacement for the time being to hold me over?

  14. Roy Lewis Says:

You’ve had the same response for years. Obviously we Apple users are a VERY low priority. Nice product, lousy attitude!

  15. Paul Michalski Says:

I am thinking of making the switch from PC to Mac and love Bluebeam. Is there a digital pen/pad that you know works with a Mac running Bluebeam under Bootcamp or Parallels? Thanks.

  16. Mike Says:

I will be be adding a request to Bluebeam for a version written for the Mac. Please please please!

  17. Doug Says:

Do you have a release date for the ipad yet?

  18. Travis Willson Says:

iPad version yet? I just want to make sure you’re aware of the demand for this. :)

  19. Marek Says:

Don’t forget the Android based tablets such as the Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1

  20. Matt Says:

Please turn up the heat on your mac/ipad development. I have my credit card ready to pay for as soon as it hits the store. My coworkers all agree!!!!!!!!!

  21. Chris Laude Says:

Please keep up posted on a Mac Version of Buebeam. I am only one of many that is eagerly looking forward to the Mac version!

  22. Lauren Says:

Our General Contracting company use ipads, and we were just introduced to Bluebeam and LOVE IT. We are currently on a large project and would love to have bluebeam on our ipads for punch lists. Any idea of how long it will take?

  23. Julie G Says:

My mac needs you. Ditto – credit card in hand – ready to order!!!! Any more info on release date in 2012? Picking up the new iPad on Friday. Would love to add bluebeam as my first app!!!

  24. R. Anderson Says:

I am a Mac user and I have long used Bluebeam under virtualization environments, first tried VMWare and then Parallels. Parallels is not as bad, but still the user experience of using PDF Revu is not as good, as the speed of screen rendering is bad under that scenario. The drawing constantly “redraws” and I find myself frustrated and constantly waiting to be able to get work done. This is especially true when doing markups on a large construction drawing sheet.

I have ultimately given up and use a Dell laptop exclusively for using PDF Revu, but then that is also inconvenient, and I have found myself using Revu less and less. Therefore I am only using Revu for tasks when I need to markup drawings, and use Mac based programs for all other mundane tasks, which I could evidently do better with Revu.

Conclusion: we need a Mac version of Revu FAST. I really hope it’s coming…..

  25. DennisT Says:

We just discovered BlueBeam REVU and it’s instantly popular here. I just downloaded the Bluebeam iPad App and can’t wait to try it. Looking forward to REVU on iPad. That and DropBox will change the way we do business.

    Thanks for the great product.

  26. AndrewH Says:

Bluebeam is awesome, but Bluebeam for Mac would be sublime!
